Calling All Readers

Are you a reader either of the dead tree (book) or electron (kindle) variety?  I am, but until a few months ago I had too much going on to do much reading for pleasure with the exception of magazines…  Thankfully back in August I finally caught up with enough stuff that I was able to start reading again…

The biggest problem I have as a reader though is that I’m a pretty fast reader, during the 8 days I was in Florida I managed to read 3 books each almost 300 pages long.  As a result I tend to always be looking for new books and have signed up over at Goodreads in the hopes of discovering new books.  I love the concept of Goodreads, it’s like Facebook for readers - the trouble is it can be absolutely maddening to navigate.  Dispite this I encourage you to sign up, friend me up and share your libraries - hopefully we’ll all get some good recommendations.  I’ve got some pretty notable folks who are friends of mine on Goodreads including Patricia, Mrs. Todd (as in wife of Todd from White Roof Radio) Molly Wood from CNet, Veronica Belmont from Tekzilla, and Vince Patton a former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard.

As for book recommendations so far:

Non-Fiction - The Pentagon: A History by Steve Vogel.

Sci-Fi - Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds.  This is a trilogy of books

Dauntless by Jack Campbell.  This is the first of a 6 book series.  Book 5 is scheduled to be released in April.

So share some books…

Reminder Time

We all know what a huge fan of OpenDNS I am right? I mean, I’ve had the graphic on my page for over a year. Everyone that I directly support is using OpenDNS too. It’s good stuff and they are good people.

I was reading about the latest phishing scam on the Twitter blog. Out of curiosity, I thought I would see what that page looked like for myself. If it weren’t for that graphic above, it would have popped right open. As it worked out, I had to actually click through one more time to view the site. And they are bad bad people.

There is the Twitter phishing site, but if you go to the main root of that domain, they have an exact replica of Facebook as well. This site too was initially blocked by OpenDNS.

Let’s let this be a reminder to all of you out there to make the switch for you and your users. It’s quicker, it’s super reliable and safer. Bonus it’s free! You can sign-up for an account (which is also free) and get some pretty kick-ass controls if you want to do some serious site blocking. Super handy for you small-office-users-without-a-full-time-IT-guy.

Give it a go. I’m sure you’ll find your Internet experience to be greatly improved.

The Sunday Post 64

So that happened faster than I thought it would.

Welcome new Team Members

In an effort to provide the internet with more :ahem: high quality user generated content on a social scale, the management of donburnside.com is please to announce the newest members of the writing staff.

You have already met Micheal. Make sure you extend an equal welcome to CJ and Drill when they first post as well.

When are they going to post? Now, there is an interesting question. We are pretty casual around these parts and don’t follow things like deadlines (yet), or word counts (yet). There is a really good chance none of that will happen (but we will be keeping a close eye on Michael).

The idea here isn’t to create a site with multiple authors that post more content in a day than 20 people can read :cough:engadet:cough: :cough:crunchgear:cough:. The idea was to add another voice or two. I’ve been posting here for a while and thought a little something different every now and again would be a good thing.

What are they going to post? We are a fixed-topic free zone here at donburnside.com, so I honestly have no idea. I do know that it will be something that they know about, or something that they have created and, almost certainly, something interesting.

We at donburnside.com intermediarian solutioneering are pleased with the changes going on around us and are looking forward to a very socially user-generated 2009!

Mucking About on Db’s Site

So db solicited for contributors here on donburnside.com and then gave me permission to post.  However he never gave me any ground rules before he turned me loose…. That may have been a mistake on his part…

For now at least I’ll behave myself…

Actually a quick introduction, I’m Michael and db has had a link to my irregularly updated site in his sidebar for a few years now.  I met db through the MINI community (you’re stunned I’m sure) and have somehow managed to become a semi-regular host over on White Roof Radio.  According to the Personnel Directory here I’m also the Chief Plumber - again possibly not one of db’s better decisions.  Then again I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express on New Years Eve…

Elsewhere I’m the Chief Photographer and Behind the Scenes Person over at www.mycruiseplanner.net (a position I just made up) as well as producer and co-Presenter with Patricia of The Mail Buoy Podcast.  I’ve also got two Flickr streams that I post to, one for the Cruise Planners site and the other is my personal one that’s not cruise related.  If you look hard enough there’s also a few other places on the web you can find me.

Anyway, until I can come up with something interesting to post I’ll solicit some input from the donburnside.com audience.

What are your tech predictions for 2009?  Will there be chaos as the digital TV transition occurs in February?  Will Steve Jobs leave Apple this year?  Will Best Buy or Circuit City survive the year? What cool gadgets are coming this year?  Leave a comment and let me know what you think….

New Feature

Like I mentioned in the last video hour (you really should watch), I have some changes planned for this site for 2009 that might or might not envolve you, the fine donburnside.com reader.

To start, the Personnel Directory page has been newly created for 2009. Much like the old Cast of Characters page at w(t)f, it’s a list of the regular players her in the Solutioneering Empire.

Would you like a position here at donburnside.com? It’s not an actual job, which means there isn’t actual money to pay you or provide benefits, but it is fun. If you check out the list you will see that it is the people that play along here more than the rest, mostly in the comments of the posts or in the video. That’s it. I would like to add more, but that depends entirely on you. So get to commenting!

Did you make the list but don’t want to be on it? Let me know. Have a funnier photo I could use? Let me know. Want to re-write your description? If it’s funny and short, let me know!.
